| I wish to become a yoga teacher in Canada Katya Hayes I have always had an interest in ¡°alternative¡± forms of healing. By alternative, I mean, as opposed to conventional western methods. I was lucky to be raised in a part of Canada where alternative forms of healing, such as yoga, meditation, naturopathy, etc. are widely accepted and practiced. The west coast of Canada in well known for its natural environment and down-to-earth people. Fortunately, the yoga community is growing, and is becoming more available nationwide. In the 1960¡¯s, a revolution started in North America. People started opening their minds, and became liberated, outspoken individual with a strong desire to awaken the consciouseness of the country at this time, yoga & maditation became very popular. But, as the revolution quietened, due to the rapidly modernizing world, so did yoga and meditation. Fortunately though, in the last few years, yoga is again becoming a widly practiced philosophy. I think as many westerners realize the material world and economic power can not fulfill the desire for spiritual balance and growth, they are turning to more meaningful paths, such as yoga. For a long time the Eastern ways of thinking were considered very mysterious, magical, unknown concepts to westerners. And still, there continues to be a misunderstanding do what yoga is, and how it helps the body. But, this misconception is changing, as yoga, and other alternative forms of healing are becoming more widespread. In fact, even the medical community is now ¡°going back¡± to old methods of healing and recognizing what incredible benefits it offers. Nowadays, there are many schools of yoga and meditation for westerners, and it is becoming a highly regarded method of healing. I believe there is a great need for yoga and meditation in North America, and its wonderful to see people discover how important their bodies are. As North Americans become more spiritually aware, their bodies are once again becoming their sacred temples. Discovering that my body is my shrine has changed my life. When I arrived in Seoul in Septermber, I really needed something to help me maintain my inner balance. As foreigner living in Seoul can prove to be, at times, stressful. I started going to the zen Buddist temple, Hwagyesa. When I started studing yoga at Hongik Yoga Institute, it was like I had come home. I felt as though, I was practicing something I already knew, it felt natural. Now my body feels strong, healthy, and most importantly, balanced. Yoga provides me with an amazing source of energy and peace. I now feel like I have much more control over my emotions and my mind. Yoga has interlinked all my ¡°`bodies¡±, physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. After practice I feel a serenity wash over me, yet an inner source of energy that fills me with motivation and desire for spiritual growth. I have finally found a path I wish to continue walking for many life times. Katya Hayes is Canadian who loves rice and Kimchi. As her firm will and the power of affinity won recognition from the Master, she graduated Kkaedatgi weekend school in the institute. She returned to Canada and now teaches yoga, doing farming. |
